So Moses took his wife and his sons, put them on a donkey, and started back to Egypt. He took with him the walking stick of God.

Raise your walking stick and hold it over the sea so that the sea will split and the people can cross it on dry land.

So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some men and go and fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill, holding the walking stick of God in my hands.”

Jethro had sent a message ahead to Moses that said, “I, Jethro, your father-in-law, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons.”

Then Moses lifted his hand and hit the rock twice with his stick. Water began pouring out, and the people and their animals drank it.

When Moses heard him say this, he left Egypt and went to live in the land of Midian where he was a stranger. While Moses lived in Midian, he had two sons.
