Exodus 32:1

The people saw that a long time had passed and Moses had not come down from the mountain. So they gathered around Aaron and said, “Moses led us out of Egypt, but we don’t know what has happened to him. Make us gods who will lead us.”

So Lot went out and said to his future sons-in-law who were pledged to marry his daughters, “Hurry and leave this city! The Lord is about to destroy it!” But they thought Lot was joking.

But Abimelech said, “I don’t know who did this. You never told me about this before today.”

But Joseph refused and said to her, “My master trusts me with everything in his house. He has put me in charge of everything he owns.

Joseph said to them, “What have you done? Didn’t you know that a man like me can learn things by signs and dreams?”

They were not far from the city when Joseph said to the servant in charge of his house, “Go after the men. When you catch up with them, say, ‘Why have you paid back evil for good?

The people made a gold calf at Mount Sinai and worshiped a metal statue.

The Lord showed them the way; during the day he went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud, and during the night he was in a pillar of fire to give them light. In this way they could travel during the day or night.

They said to Moses, “What have you done to us? Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in the desert? There were plenty of graves for us in Egypt.

They said to them, “It would have been better if the Lord had killed us in the land of Egypt. There we had meat to eat and all the food we wanted. But you have brought us into this desert to starve us to death.”

You must not use gold or silver to make idols for yourselves; do not worship these gods in addition to me.

The Lord said to Moses, “Come up the mountain to me. Wait there, and I will give you two stone tablets. On these are the teachings and the commands I have written to instruct the people.”

Then Moses went into the cloud and went higher up the mountain. He was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

But Moses begged the Lord his God and said, “Lord, don’t let your anger destroy your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with your great power and strength.

Aaron answered, “Don’t be angry, master. You know that these people are always ready to do wrong.

The people said to me, ‘Moses led us out of Egypt, but we don’t know what has happened to him. Make us gods who will lead us.’

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go down from this mountain, because your people, the people you brought out of the land of Egypt, have ruined themselves.

Go up to a fertile land. But I will not go with you, because I might destroy you on the way, since you are such a stubborn people.”

“ ‘But they turned against me and refused to listen to me. They did not throw away the hateful idols which they saw and liked; they did not give up the idols of Egypt. Then I decided to pour out my anger against them while they were still in Egypt.

Later the Lord used a prophet to bring Jacob’s descendants out of Egypt; he used a prophet to take care of the Israelites.

I brought you from the land of Egypt and freed you from slavery; I sent Moses, Aaron, and Miriam to you.

All these people saw my glory and the miracles I did in Egypt and in the desert, but they disobeyed me and tested me ten times.

Remember this: If the owner of the house knew what time of night a thief was coming, the owner would watch and not let the thief break in.

But suppose that evil servant thinks to himself, ‘My master will not come back soon,’

Since we are God’s children, you must not think that God is like something that people imagine or make from gold, silver, or rock.

But look at what this man Paul is doing. He has convinced and turned away many people in Ephesus and in almost all of Asia! He says the gods made by human hands are not real.

They said to Aaron, ‘Make us gods who will lead us. Moses led us out of Egypt, but we don’t know what has happened to him.’

The Lord himself will go before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forget you. Don’t be afraid and don’t worry.”

Listen, Israel. You will soon cross the Jordan River to go in and force out nations that are bigger and stronger than you. They have large cities with walls up to the sky.

When I went up on the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets with the Agreement the Lord had made with you, I stayed on the mountain for forty days and forty nights; I did not eat bread or drink water.

“Now go! Make the people holy. Tell them, ‘Set yourselves apart to the Lord for tomorrow. The Lord, the God of Israel, says some of you are keeping things he commanded you to destroy. You will never defeat your enemies until you throw away those things.

They will say, “Jesus promised to come again. Where is he? Our fathers have died, but the world continues the way it has been since it was made.”
