The only things inside the Ark were two stone tablets that Moses had put in the Ark at Mount Sinai. That was where the Lord made his agreement with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt.

Then Asa and the people made a promise before the Lord, shouting with a loud voice and blowing trumpets and sheep’s horns.

He says, “Gather around, you who worship me, who have made an agreement with me, using a sacrifice.”

But their words were false, and their tongues lied to him.

All the people answered together, “We will do everything he has said.” Then Moses took their answer back to the Lord.

“This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: I brought your ancestors out of Egypt where they were slaves and made an agreement with them.

It does not matter if we like the message or not. We will obey the Lord our God, to whom we are sending you. We will obey what he says so good things will happen to us.”

“ ‘Later when I passed by you and looked at you, I saw that you were old enough for love. So I spread my robe over you and covered your nakedness. I also made a promise to you and entered into an agreement with you so that you became mine, says the Lord God.

We all have the same father; the same God made us. So why do people break their promises to each other and show no respect for the agreement our ancestors made with God?

After the law of Moses and the writings of the prophets were read, the leaders of the synagogue sent a message to Paul and Barnabas: “Brothers, if you have any message that will encourage the people, please speak.”

After this letter is read to you, be sure it is also read to the church in Laodicea. And you read the letter that I wrote to Laodicea.

I tell you by the authority of the Lord to read this letter to all the believers.

Then the people said to Joshua, “We will serve the Lord our God, and we will obey him.”
