Children, obey your parents as the Lord wants, because this is the right thing to do.

Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not forget your mother when she is old.

My son, keep your father’s commands, and don’t forget your mother’s teaching.

My child, listen to your father’s teaching and do not forget your mother’s advice.

If someone has a son who is stubborn, who turns against his father and mother and doesn’t obey them or listen when they correct him,

“ ‘You must respect your mother and father, and you must keep my Sabbaths. I am the Lord your God.

But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to do their duty to their own family and to repay their parents or grandparents. That pleases God.

Do not be shaped by this world; instead be changed within by a new way of thinking. Then you will be able to decide what God wants for you; you will know what is good and pleasing to him and what is perfect.

“If you make fun of your father and refuse to obey your mother, the birds of the valley will peck out your eyes, and the vultures will eat them.

So the law is holy, and the command is holy and right and good.

Jesus went with them to Nazareth and was obedient to them. But his mother kept in her mind all that had happened.

A wise person will know these things, and an understanding person will take them to heart. The Lord’s ways are right. Good people live by following them, but those who turn against God die because of them.

“Some people curse their fathers and do not bless their mothers.

and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Northwest Mesopotamia.

The orders of the Lord are right; they make people happy. The commands of the Lord are pure; they light up the way.

Esther still had not told anyone about her family or who her people were, just as Mordecai had commanded her. She obeyed Mordecai just as she had done when she was under his care.

So my dear brothers and sisters, stand strong. Do not let anything move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your work in the Lord is never wasted.

I ask you to accept her in the Lord in the way God’s people should. Help her with anything she needs, because she has helped me and many other people also.

Lord, I know that your laws are right and that it was right for you to punish me.

Israel said to Joseph, “Go to Shechem where your brothers are grazing the flocks.” Joseph answered, “I will go.”

‘Jonadab son of Recab ordered his descendants not to drink wine, and that command has been obeyed. Until today they have obeyed their ancestor’s command; they do not drink wine. But I, the Lord, have given you messages again and again, but you did not obey me.

Then Jeremiah said to the Recabites, “This is what the Lord All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says: ‘You have obeyed the commands of your ancestor Jonadab and have followed all of his teachings; you have done everything he commanded.’

Then Joseph moved his sons off Israel’s lap and bowed facedown to the ground.

So Jacob’s sons did as their father commanded.
