Respect the Lord your God. You must worship him and make your promises only in his name.

Jesus answered, “It is written in the Scriptures: ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’ ”

Jesus said to the devil, “Go away from me, Satan! It is written in the Scriptures, ‘You must worship the Lord your God and serve only him.’ ”

Respect the Lord your God and serve him. Be loyal to him and make your promises in his name.

Serve only the Lord your God. Respect him, keep his commands, and obey him. Serve him and be loyal to him.

You must not make a false promise by my name, or you will show that you don’t respect your God. I am the Lord.

I want them to learn their lessons well. In the past they taught my people to swear by Baal’s name. But if they will now learn to swear by my name, saying, ‘As surely as the Lord lives . . . ’ I will allow them to rebuild among my people.

People in the land who ask for blessings will ask for them from the faithful God. And people in the land who make a promise will promise in the name of the faithful God, because the troubles of the past will be forgotten. I will make those troubles go away.

I will make a promise by my own power, and my promise is true; what I say will not be changed. I promise that everyone will bow before me and will promise to follow me.

But the king will rejoice in his God. All who make promises in his name will praise him, but the mouths of liars will be shut.

Now, Israel, this is what the Lord your God wants you to do: Respect the Lord your God, and do what he has told you to do. Love him. Serve the Lord your God with your whole being,

If you say when you make a promise, ‘As surely as the Lord lives,’ and you can say it in a truthful, honest, and right way, then the nations will be blessed by him, and they will praise him for what he has done.”

So now, promise me before the Lord that you will show kindness to my family just as I showed kindness to you. Give me some proof that you will do this.

They do not respect hateful people but honor those who honor the Lord. They keep their promises to their neighbors, even when it hurts.

You, your children, and your grandchildren must respect the Lord your God as long as you live. Obey all his rules and commands I give you so that you will live a long time.

I wish their hearts would always respect me and that they would always obey my commands so that things would go well for them and their children forever!

The Lord said, “Tell me why I should forgive you. Your children have left me and have made promises to idols that are not gods at all. I gave your children everything they needed, but they still were like an unfaithful wife to me. They spent much time in houses of prostitutes.

Although the people say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives!’ they don’t really mean it.”

“You have heard that it was said to our people long ago, ‘Don’t break your promises, but keep the promises you make to the Lord.’

“You must not use the name of the Lord your God thoughtlessly; the Lord will punish anyone who misuses his name.

If you worship the Lord your God, I will bless your bread and your water. I will take away sickness from you.

“You must not use the name of the Lord your God thoughtlessly, because the Lord will punish anyone who uses his name in this way.

Don’t become friends with the people living among us who are not Israelites. Don’t say the names of their gods or make anyone swear by them. Don’t serve or worship them.

Samuel spoke to the whole group of Israel, saying, “If you’re turning back to the Lord with all your hearts, you must remove your foreign gods and your idols of Ashtoreth. You must give yourselves fully to the Lord and serve only him. Then he will save you from the Philistines.”

But David took an oath, saying, “Your father knows very well that you like me. He says to himself, ‘Jonathan must not know about it, or he will tell David.’ As surely as the Lord lives and as you live, I am only a step away from death!”

Worship the Lord who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and strength. Bow down to him and offer sacrifices to him.

The Lord says, “Family of Jacob, listen to me. You are called Israel, and you come from the family of Judah. You swear by the Lord’s name and praise the God of Israel, but you are not honest or sincere.

Make a promise to me before the Lord, the God of heaven and earth. Don’t get a wife for my son from the Canaanite girls who live around here.

The prophets or dreamers must be killed, because they said you should turn against the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt and saved you from the land where you were slaves. They tried to turn you from doing what the Lord your God commanded you to do. You must get rid of the evil among you.

Then Joshua said to the people, “Now respect the Lord and serve him fully and sincerely. Throw away the gods that your ancestors worshiped on the other side of the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord.
