Don’t cheat hired servants who are poor and needy, whether they are fellow Israelites or foreigners living in one of your towns.

Whoever mistreats the poor insults their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

Whoever gets rich by mistreating the poor, and gives presents to the wealthy, will become poor.

The people in you hate their fathers and mothers. They mistreat the foreigners in you and wrong the orphans and widows in you.

“ ‘You must not cheat your neighbor or rob him. You must not keep a hired worker’s salary all night until morning.

They walk on poor people as if they were dirt, and they refuse to be fair to those who are suffering. Fathers and sons have sexual relations with the same woman, and so they ruin my holy name.

Listen to this message, you cows of Bashan on the Mountain of Samaria. You take things from the poor and crush people who are in need. Then you command your husbands, “Bring us something to drink!”

Listen to me, you who walk on helpless people, you who are trying to destroy the poor people of this country, saying,

The Lord All-Powerful says, “Then I will come to you and judge you. I will be quick to testify against those who take part in evil magic, adultery, and lying under oath, those who cheat workers of their pay and who cheat widows and orphans, those who are unfair to foreigners, and those who do not respect me.

Stay in the same house, eating and drinking what the people there give you. A worker should be given his pay. Don’t move from house to house.

If there are poor among you, in one of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be selfish or greedy toward them.

because the Scripture says: “When an ox is working in the grain, do not cover its mouth to keep it from eating,” and “A worker should be given his pay.”
