Kenaniah was from the Izhar family. He and his sons worked outside the Temple as officers and judges in different places in Israel.

When people have a disagreement, they come to me, and I decide who is right. I tell them God’s laws and teachings.”

“This is what the Lord All-Powerful says: ‘If you do as I tell you and serve me, you will be in charge of my Temple and my courtyards. And I will let you be with these angels who are standing here.

They went to the prophets and priests who were at the Temple of the Lord All-Powerful. The men said, “For years in the fifth month of each year we have shown our sadness and fasted. Should we continue to do this?”

“A priest should teach what he knows, and people should learn the teachings from him, because he is the messenger of the Lord All-Powerful.

Appoint judges and officers for your tribes in every town the Lord your God is giving you; they must judge the people fairly.

You must follow the decision they give you at the place the Lord your God will choose. Be careful to do everything they tell you.

The priests, the sons of Levi, should come forward, because they have been chosen by the Lord your God to serve him and to give blessings in the Lord’s name. They are the ones who decide cases of quarreling and attacks.

If two people have an argument and go to court, the judges will decide the case. They will declare one person right and the other guilty.

He teaches your laws to the people of Jacob and your teachings to the people of Israel. He burns incense before you and makes whole burnt offerings on your altar.
