“The Israelites will become captives again, as they were in Egypt, and Assyria will become their king, because they refuse to turn back to God.

Israel’s pride will cause their defeat; they will not turn back to the Lord their God or look to him for help in all this.

“I did not give you any food in your cities, and there was not enough to eat in any of your towns, but you did not come back to me,” says the Lord.

You will eat, but you won’t become full; you will still be hungry and empty. You will store up, but save nothing, and what you store up, the sword will destroy.

You have planted much, but you harvest little. You eat, but you do not become full. You drink, but you are still thirsty. You put on clothes, but you are not warm enough. You earn money, but then you lose it all as if you had put it into a purse full of holes.”

I destroyed your work with diseases, mildew, and hail, but you still did not come back to me,’ says the Lord.
