“I sent disasters against you, as I did to Egypt. I killed your young men with swords, and your horses were taken from you. I made you smell the stink from all the dead bodies, but still you did not come back to me,” says the Lord.

At that time the Lord began to make Israel smaller. Hazael defeated the Israelites in all the land of Israel,

So the Lord was angry with Israel and handed them over to Hazael king of Aram and his son Ben-Hadad for a long time.

Nothing was left of Jehoahaz’s army except fifty horsemen, ten chariots, and ten thousand foot soldiers. The king of Aram had destroyed them and made them like chaff.

Hazael asked, “Why are you crying, master?” Elisha answered, “Because I know what evil you will do to the Israelites. You will burn their strong, walled cities with fire and kill their young men with swords. You will throw their babies to the ground and split open their pregnant women.”

But the Lord made the king stubborn again, so he refused to let them go.

So Moses and Aaron went to the king and told him, “This is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: ‘How long will you refuse to be sorry for what you have done? Let my people go to worship me.

I will make the king stubborn again so he will chase after them, but I will defeat the king and his army. This will bring honor to me, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” The Israelites did just as they were told.

He said, “You must obey the Lord your God and do what he says is right. If you obey all his commands and keep his rules, I will not bring on you any of the sicknesses I brought on the Egyptians. I am the Lord who heals you.”

So the magicians told the king that the power of God had done this. But the king was stubborn and refused to listen to them, just as the Lord had said.

But the Lord made the king stubborn, so he refused to listen to Moses and Aaron, just as the Lord had said.

You are still against my people and do not want to let them go.

Their bodies will be thrown outside. The stink will rise from the bodies, and the blood will flow down the mountains.

But instead, some of you want to light your own fires and make your own light. So, go, walk in the light of your fires, and trust your own light to guide you. But this is what you will receive from me: You will lie down in a place of pain.

The Arameans came from the east and the Philistines from the west, and they ate up Israel with their armies. But the Lord was still angry; his hand was still raised to punish the people.

But the people did not return to the one who had struck them; they did not follow the Lord All-Powerful.

So the Lord is not happy with the young people, nor will he show mercy to the orphans and widows. All the people are separated from God and are very evil; they all speak lies. But the Lord is still angry; his hand is still raised to strike down the people.

So this is what the Lord All-Powerful says: “I will soon punish the men from Anathoth. Their young men will die in war. Their sons and daughters will die from hunger.

“I will send four kinds of destroyers against them,” says the Lord. “I will send war to kill, dogs to drag the bodies away, and the birds of the air and wild animals to eat and destroy the bodies.

“They will die of terrible diseases, and no one will cry for them or bury them. Their bodies will lie on the ground like dung. They will die in war, or they will starve to death. Their bodies will be food for the birds of the sky and for the wild animals.”

So now, let their children starve, and let their enemies kill them with swords. Let their wives lose their children and husbands. Let the men from Judah be put to death and the young men be killed with swords in battle.

The destroyer of Moab and her towns has arrived. Her best young men will be killed!” says the King, whose name is the Lord All-Powerful.

Surely the young men will die in the city squares, and all her soldiers will be killed at that time,” says the Lord All-Powerful.

Lord, don’t you look for truth in people? You struck the people of Judah, but they didn’t feel any pain. You crushed them, but they refused to learn what is right. They became more stubborn than a rock; they refused to turn back to God.

But I am full of the anger of the Lord, and I am tired of holding it in. “Pour out my anger on the children who play in the street and on the young men gathered together. A husband and his wife will both be caught in his anger, as will the very old.

Say, “This is what the Lord says: ‘The dead bodies of people will lie in the open field like dung. They will lie like grain a farmer has cut, but there will be no one to gather them.’ ”

“The Israelites will become captives again, as they were in Egypt, and Assyria will become their king, because they refuse to turn back to God.

I will force the army from the north to leave your land and go into a dry, empty land. Their soldiers in front will be forced into the Dead Sea, and those in the rear into the Mediterranean Sea. Their bodies will rot and stink. The Lord has surely done a wonderful thing!”

As a result, I will do this to you: I will cause terrible things to happen to you. I will cause you to have disease and fever that will destroy your eyes and slowly kill you. You will not have success when you plant your seed, and your enemy will eat your crops.

You broke my agreement, and I will punish you. I will bring armies against you, and if you go into your cities for safety, I will cause diseases to spread among you so that your enemy will defeat you.

“I did not give you any food in your cities, and there was not enough to eat in any of your towns, but you did not come back to me,” says the Lord.

“On that day the palace songs will become funeral songs,” says the Lord God. “There will be dead bodies thrown everywhere! Silence!”

I destroyed your work with diseases, mildew, and hail, but you still did not come back to me,’ says the Lord.

The Lord will give you terrible diseases and destroy you from the land you are going to take.

The Lord will punish you with disease, fever, swelling, heat, lack of rain, plant diseases, and mildew until you die.

He will give you all the diseases of Egypt that you dread, and the diseases will stay with you.

The Lord will take away all disease from you; you will not have the terrible diseases that were in Egypt, but he will give them to all the people who hate you.
