But some of them became stubborn. They refused to believe and said evil things about the Way of Jesus before all the people. So Paul left them, and taking the followers with him, he went to the school of a man named Tyrannus. There Paul talked with people every day

But the people would not listen. They were stubborn, just as their ancestors had been who did not believe in the Lord their God.

Don’t be stubborn as your ancestors were, but obey the Lord willingly. Come to the Temple, which he has made holy forever. Serve the Lord your God so he will not be angry with you.

But they made fun of God’s prophets and hated God’s messages. They refused to listen to the prophets until, finally, the Lord became so angry with his people that he could not be stopped.

You warned them to return to your teachings, but they were proud and did not obey your commands. If someone obeys your laws, he will live, but they sinned against your laws. They were stubborn, unwilling, and disobedient.

“Do not be stubborn, as your ancestors were at Meribah, as they were that day at Massah in the desert.

Happy are those who listen to me, watching at my door every day, waiting at my open doorway.

Then he will be a place of safety for you. But for the two families of Israel, he will be like a stone that causes people to stumble, like a rock that makes them fall. He will be like a trap for the people of Jerusalem, and he will catch them in his trap.

and when he found Saul, he brought him to Antioch. For a whole year Saul and Barnabas met with the church and taught many people there. In Antioch the followers were called Christians for the first time.

But the city was divided. Some of the people agreed with the Jews, and others believed the apostles.

Some of them were convinced and joined Paul and Silas, along with many of the Greeks who worshiped God and many of the important women.

And during that time, there was some serious trouble in Ephesus about the Way of Jesus.

Paul wanted to go in and talk to the crowd, but the followers did not let him.

So be careful! Always remember that for three years, day and night, I never stopped warning each of you, and I often cried over you.

I persecuted the people who followed the Way of Jesus, and some of them were even killed. I arrested men and women and put them in jail.

But I did shout one thing when I stood before them: ‘You are judging me today because I believe that people will rise from the dead!’ ”

But we want to hear your ideas, because we know that people everywhere are speaking against this religious group.”

Stephen continued speaking: “You stubborn people! You have not given your hearts to God, nor will you listen to him! You are always against what the Holy Spirit is trying to tell you, just as your ancestors were.

and asked him to write letters to the synagogues in the city of Damascus. Then if Saul found any followers of Christ’s Way, men or women, he would arrest them and bring them back to Jerusalem.

So this is what has happened: Although the Israelites tried to be right with God, they did not succeed, but the ones God chose did become right with him. The others were made stubborn and refused to listen to God.

So God shows mercy where he wants to show mercy, and he makes stubborn the people he wants to make stubborn.

because a good opportunity for a great and growing work has been given to me now. And there are many people working against me.

and constant quarrels from those who have evil minds and have lost the truth. They think that serving God is a way to get rich.

You know that everyone in Asia has left me, even Phygelus and Hermogenes.

and will act as if they serve God but will not have his power. Stay away from those people.

Preach the Good News. Be ready at all times, and tell people what they need to do. Tell them when they are wrong. Encourage them with great patience and careful teaching,

But encourage each other every day while it is “today.” Help each other so none of you will become hardened because sin has tricked you.

But these people speak against things they do not understand. They are like animals that act without thinking, animals born to be caught and killed. And, like animals, these false teachers will be destroyed.

Many will follow their evil ways and say evil things about the way of truth.

But these people speak against things they do not understand. And what they do know, by feeling, as dumb animals know things, are the very things that destroy them.
