When the crowds saw what Paul did, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have become like humans and have come down to us!”

You are not being sent to people whose speech you can’t understand, whose language is difficult. You are being sent to Israel.

They shouted, “This is the voice of a god, not a human!”

Then the people began to call Barnabas “Zeus” and Paul “Hermes,” because he was the main speaker.

When Paul and Barnabas learned about this, they ran away to Lystra and Derbe, cities in Lycaonia, and to the areas around those cities.

The people thought that Paul would swell up or fall down dead. They waited and watched him for a long time, but nothing bad happened to him. So they changed their minds and said, “He is a god!”

All the people—the least important and the most important—paid attention to Simon, saying, “This man has the power of God, called ‘the Great Power’!”
