While Absalom was offering sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel, one of the people who advised David, to come from his hometown of Giloh. So Absalom’s plans were working very well. More and more people began to support him.

In the past I served your father. So whom should I serve now? David’s son! I will serve you as I served him.”

Ahithophel said, “Your father left behind some of his slave women to take care of the palace. Have sexual relations with them. Then all Israel will hear that your father is your enemy, and all your people will be encouraged to give you more support.”

The kings of the earth prepare to fight, and their leaders make plans together against the Lord and his appointed one.

If we don’t make plans against them, the number of their people will grow even more. Then if there is a war, they might join our enemies and fight us and escape from the country!”

There is no wisdom, understanding, or advice that can succeed against the Lord.

How terrible it will be for those who try to hide things from the Lord and who do their work in darkness. They think no one will see them or know what they do.

Make your plans for the fight, but they will be defeated. Give orders to your armies, but they will be useless, because God is with us.

Early the next morning, all the leading priests and elders of the people decided that Jesus should die.
