Because the Lord loved David, the Lord gave him a kingdom in Jerusalem and allowed him to have a son to be king after him. The Lord also kept Jerusalem safe.

I will add fifteen years to your life. I will save you and this city from the king of Assyria; I will protect the city for my sake and for the sake of my servant David.’ ”

But the Lord would not destroy Judah because of his servant David. The Lord had promised that one of David’s descendants would always rule.

The Lord All-Powerful will defend Jerusalem like birds flying over their nests. He will defend and save it; he will ‘pass over’ and save Jerusalem.”

I will save you and this city from the king of Assyria; I will defend this city.

“I, I am the One who erases all your sins, for my sake; I will not remember your sins.

I do this for myself, for my own sake. I will not let people speak evil against me, and I will not let some god take my glory.

But for my own sake I will be patient. People will praise me for not becoming angry and destroying you.

Power and peace will be in his kingdom and will continue to grow forever. He will rule as king on David’s throne and over David’s kingdom. He will make it strong by ruling with justice and goodness from now on and forever. The Lord All-Powerful will do this because of his strong love for his people.

only then could you change my agreement with David and Levi. Only then would my servant David not have a descendant ruling as king on David’s throne. And only then would the family of Levi not be priests serving me in the Temple.

only then would I turn away from Jacob’s descendants. And only then would I not let the descendants of David my servant rule over the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. But I will be kind to them and cause good things to happen to them again.”

“So say to the people of Israel, ‘This is what the Lord God says: Israel, I am going to act, but not for your sake. I will do something to help my holy name, which you have dishonored among the nations where you went.

But I will show pity to the people of Judah. I will save them, but not by using bows or swords, horses or horsemen, or weapons of war. I, the Lord their God, will save them.”

I will protect my Temple from armies who would come or go. No one will hurt my people again, because now I am watching them.

That Holy Spirit is the guarantee that we will receive what God promised for his people until God gives full freedom to those who are his—to bring praise to God’s glory.

and it brings praise to God because of his wonderful grace. God gave that grace to us freely, in Christ, the One he loves.

But I didn’t want their enemy to brag; their enemy might misunderstand and say, ‘We have won! The Lord has done none of this.’ ”
