I have many things to write to you, but I do not want to use paper and ink. Instead, I hope to come to you and talk face to face so we can be full of joy.

I have told you these things so that you can have the same joy I have and so that your joy will be the fullest possible joy.

We write this to you so we may be full of joy.

I especially beg you to pray so that God will send me back to you soon.

I hope to visit you on my way to Spain. After I enjoy being with you for a while, I hope you can help me on my trip.

“I am coming to you now. But I pray these things while I am still in the world so that these followers can have all of my joy in them.

Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy will be the fullest possible joy.

I want you to know that our brother Timothy has been let out of prison. If he arrives soon, we will both come to see you.

One more thing—prepare a room for me in which to stay, because I hope God will answer your prayers and I will be able to come to you.

Remembering that you cried for me, I want very much to see you so I can be filled with joy.

The bride belongs only to the bridegroom. But the friend who helps the bridegroom stands by and listens to him. He is thrilled that he gets to hear the bridegroom’s voice. In the same way, I am really happy.

So if I come, I will talk about what Diotrephes is doing, about how he lies and says evil things about us. But more than that, he refuses to accept the other brothers and sisters; he even stops those who do want to accept them and puts them out of the church.
