So I will choose their punishments, and I will punish them with what they fear most. This is because I called to them, but they did not listen. I spoke to them, but they did not hear me. They did things I said were evil; they chose to do things I did not like.”

“Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever refuses to accept you refuses to accept me. And whoever refuses to accept me refuses to accept the One who sent me.”

But the people in the kingdom hated the man. So they sent a group to follow him and say, ‘We don’t want this man to be our king.’

Now where are my enemies who didn’t want me to be king? Bring them here and kill them before me.’ ”

I tell you the truth, a servant is not greater than his master. A messenger is not greater than the one who sent him.

But Gideon told them, “The Lord will be your ruler. I will not rule over you, nor will my son rule over you.”

But now you have rejected your God. He saves you from all your troubles and problems, but you said, ‘No! We want a king to rule over us.’ Now come, stand before the Lord in your tribes and family groups.”

Samuel said to all Israel, “I have done everything you wanted me to do and have put a king over you.

But when you saw Nahash king of the Ammonites coming against you, you said, ‘No! We want a king to rule over us!’—even though the Lord your God was your king.

The Lord answered, “You must listen to them. Give them a king.” Then Samuel told the people of Israel, “Go back to your towns.”

They are doing as they have always done. When I took them out of Egypt, they left me and served other gods. They are doing the same to you.
