Where is the wise person? Where is the educated person? Where is the skilled talker of this world? God has made the wisdom of the world foolish.

Someone told David, “Ahithophel is one of the people with Absalom who made secret plans against you.” So David prayed, “Lord, please make Ahithophel’s advice foolish.”

At that time people thought Ahithophel’s advice was as reliable as God’s own word. Both David and Absalom thought it was that reliable.

Absalom and all the Israelites said, “The advice of Hushai the Arkite is better than that of Ahithophel.” (The Lord had planned to destroy the good advice of Ahithophel so the Lord could bring disaster on Absalom.)

When Ahithophel saw that the Israelites did not accept his advice, he saddled his donkey and went to his hometown. He left orders for his family and property, and then he hanged himself. He died and was buried in his father’s tomb.

God leads the wise away as captives and turns judges into fools.

He makes trusted people be silent and takes away the wisdom of elders.

He takes understanding away from the leaders of the earth and makes them wander through a pathless desert.

You will think about the terror of the past: “Where is that officer? Where is the one who collected the taxes? Where is the officer in charge of our defense towers?”

I show that the signs of the lying prophets are false; I make fools of those who do magic. I confuse even the wise; they think they know much, but I make them look foolish.

Who would have believed what we heard? Who saw the Lord’s power in this?

Everyone should respect you, King of the nations; you deserve respect. Of all the wise people among the nations and in all the kingdoms, none of them is as wise as you.

And what is the seed that fell among the thorny weeds? That seed is like the person who hears the teaching but lets worries about this life and the temptation of wealth stop that teaching from growing. So the teaching does not produce fruit in that person’s life.

Now is the time for the world to be judged; now the ruler of this world will be thrown down.

Some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers argued with him, saying, “This man doesn’t know what he is talking about. What is he trying to say?” Others said, “He seems to be telling us about some other gods,” because Paul was telling them about Jesus and his rising from the dead.

There are things about him that people cannot see—his eternal power and all the things that make him God. But since the beginning of the world those things have been easy to understand by what God has made. So people have no excuse for the bad things they do.

They said they were wise, but they became fools.

It is written in the Scriptures: “I will cause the wise to lose their wisdom; I will make the wise unable to understand.”

Brothers and sisters, look at what you were when God called you. Not many of you were wise in the way the world judges wisdom. Not many of you had great influence. Not many of you came from important families.

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and he chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

He chose what the world thinks is unimportant and what the world looks down on and thinks is nothing in order to destroy what the world thinks is important.

But when the Lord judges us, he disciplines us so that we will not be destroyed along with the world.

However, I speak a wisdom to those who are mature. But this wisdom is not from this world or from the rulers of this world, who are losing their power.

None of the rulers of this world understood it. If they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

Do not fool yourselves. If you think you are wise in this world, you should become a fool so that you can become truly wise,

because the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. It is written in the Scriptures, “He catches those who are wise in their own clever traps.”

Surely you know that God’s people will judge the world. So if you are to judge the world, are you not able to judge small cases as well?

So, you are not loyal to God! You should know that loving the world is the same as hating God. Anyone who wants to be a friend of the world becomes God’s enemy.
