¶“I was asleep but my heart was awake. A voice! My beloved was knocking: ‘Open to me, my sister, my darling, My dove, my perfect one! For my head is drenched with dew, My locks with the dew drops of the night.’

“I have taken off my dress, How can I put it on again? I have washed my feet, How can I dirty them again?

“For the vision is yet for the appointed time; It hurries toward the goal and it will not fail. Though it delays, wait for it; For it will certainly come, it will not delay long.

But if that evil slave says in his heart, ‘My master is not coming for a long time,’

“Now after a long time the master of those slaves *came and *settled accounts with them.

but the prudent ones took oil in flasks with their lamps.

But at midnight there finally was a shout: ‘Behold, the groom! Come out to meet him.’

And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and He *said to Peter, “So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour?

Again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy.

And meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah, and were wondering at his delay in the temple.

But if that slave says in his heart, ‘My master will take a long time to come,’ and he begins to beat the other slaves, both men and women, and to eat and drink and get drunk;

I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?”

But He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard and leased it to vine-growers, and went on a journey for a long time.

Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we first believed.

For this reason it says, “Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.”

Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Nevertheless what you have, hold firmly until I come.
