When King Jehoiakim and all his warriors and all the officials heard his words, then the king sought to put him to death; but Uriah heard about it, and he was afraid, so he fled and went to Egypt.

But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and one who is more than a prophet.

But if we say, ‘From men,’ we fear the people; for they all regard John as a prophet.”

For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him; but the tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; and you, seeing this, did not even have second thoughts afterward so as to believe him.

But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people will stone us to death, since they are convinced that John was a prophet.”

When they had threatened them further, they let them go (finding no basis on which to punish them) on account of the people, because they were all glorifying God for what had happened;

Then the captain went along with the officers and proceeded to bring them back without violence (for they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned).
