and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen.

And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah, or one of the other prophets.”

And His disciples asked Him, “Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?”

But others were saying, “He is Elijah.” And others were saying, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.”

They told Him, saying, “John the Baptist; and others say Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”

They answered and said, “John the Baptist, and others say Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen.”

And so they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he *said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
