Woe to you who are well-fed now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep.

Even in laughter the heart may be in pain, And the end of joy may be grief.

So that I will not be full and deny You and say, “Who is the Lord?” And that I will not become impoverished and steal, And profane the name of my God.

I said of laughter, “It is senseless,” and of pleasure, “What does this accomplish?”

Sorrow is better than laughter, For when a face is sad a heart may be happy.

For as the crackling of thorn bushes under a pot, So is the laughter of the fool; And this too is futility.

And these also reel with wine and stagger from intoxicating drink: The priest and the prophet reel with intoxicating drink, They are confused by wine, they stagger from intoxicating drink; They reel while having visions, They stagger when rendering a verdict.

¶Therefore, this is what the Lord God says: “Behold, My servants will eat, but you will be hungry. Behold, My servants will drink, but you will be thirsty. Behold, My servants will rejoice, but you will be put to shame.

They will pass through the land dejected and hungry, and it will turn out that when they are hungry, they will become enraged and curse their king and their God as they face upward.

They devour what is on the right hand but are still hungry, And they eat what is on the left hand, but they are not satisfied; Each of them eats the flesh of his own arm.

“Then I will turn your festivals into mourning, And all your songs into songs of mourning; And I will put sackcloth around everyone’s waist, And baldness on every head. And I will make it like a time of mourning for an only son, And the end of it will be like a bitter day.

Like tangled thorns, And like those who are drunken with their drink, They are consumed Like stubble completely dried up.

But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is demanded of you; and as for all that you have prepared, who will own it now?’

In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but yourselves being thrown out.

But woe to you who are rich, for you are receiving your comfort in full.

Woe to you when all the people speak well of you; for their fathers used to treat the false prophets the same way.

And they began laughing at Him, knowing that she had died.

and there must be no filthiness or foolish talk, or vulgar joking, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.

While they are saying, “Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction will come upon them like labor pains upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

Be miserable, and mourn, and weep; let your laughter be turned into mourning, and your joy into gloom.

Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have no need of anything,” and you do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked,

“Those who were full hire themselves out for bread, But those who were hungry cease to be hungry. Even the infertile woman gives birth to seven, But she who has many children languishes.
