The vine has dried up And the fig tree has withered; The pomegranate, the palm also, and the apple tree, All the trees of the field have dried up. Indeed, joy has dried up From the sons of mankind.

You have put joy in my heart, More than when their grain and new wine are abundant.

The righteous person will flourish like the palm tree, He will grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

¶“Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest, So is my beloved among the young men. In his shade I took great delight and sat down, And his fruit was sweet to my taste.

“Your branches are an orchard of pomegranates With delicious fruits, henna with nard plants,

Gladness and joy are taken away from the fruitful field; In the vineyards also there will be no cries of joy or jubilant shouting, No treader treads out wine in the presses, For I have made the shouting to cease.

There is an outcry in the streets concerning the wine; All joy turns to gloom. The joy of the earth is banished.

¶The new wine mourns, The vine decays, All the joyful-hearted sigh.

You will multiply the nation, You will increase their joy; They will rejoice in Your presence As with the joy of harvest, As people rejoice when they divide the spoils.

“The sound of an outcry from Horonaim, ‘Devastation and great destruction!’

“So joy and rejoicing are removed From the fruitful field, and from the land of Moab. And I have eliminated the wine from the wine presses; No one will tread them with shouting, The shouting will not be shouts of joy.

The field is ruined, The land mourns; For the grain is ruined, The new wine has dried up, Fresh oil has failed.

Has food not been cut off before our eyes, and Joy and rejoicing from the house of our God?

But God designated a worm when dawn came the next day, and it attacked the plant and it withered.

Is the seed still in the barn? Even including the vine, the fig tree, the pomegranate, and the olive tree, it has not produced fruit. Yet from this day on I will bless you.’ ”

Then I will rebuke the devourer for you, so that it will not destroy the fruit of your ground; nor will the vine in the field prove fruitless to you,” says the Lord of armies.

Then they came to the Valley of Eshcol, and from there they cut off a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two men, with some of the pomegranates and the figs.
