There is oath-taking, denial, murder, stealing, and adultery. They employ violence, so that bloodshed follows bloodshed.

Cain talked to his brother Abel; and it happened that when they were in the field Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.

The earth is also defiled by its inhabitants, for they violated laws, altered statutes, and broke the everlasting covenant.

“Hear this, house of Jacob, who are named Israel And who came from the waters of Judah, Who swear by the name of the Lord And invoke the God of Israel, But not in truth nor in righteousness.

¶For neither Israel nor Judah has been forsaken By his God, the Lord of armies, Although their land is full of guilt Before the Holy One of Israel.

“As a well keeps its waters fresh, So she keeps fresh her wickedness. Violence and destruction are heard in her; Sickness and wounds are constantly before Me.

Because of the sins of her prophets And the wrongdoings of her priests, Who have shed in her midst The blood of the righteous,

‘Make the chain, for the land is full of bloody crimes, and the city is full of violence.

You have plowed wickedness, you have harvested injustice, You have eaten the fruit of lies. Because you have trusted in your way, in your many warriors,

They speak mere words, With worthless oaths they make covenants; And judgment sprouts like poisonous weeds in the furrows of the field.

¶Ephraim surrounds Me with lies And the house of Israel with deceit; Judah is still unruly against God, Even against the Holy One who is faithful.

Ephraim has provoked God to bitter anger; So his Lord will leave his guilt for bloodshed on him And bring his disgrace back to him.

And the rebels have gone deep in depravity, But I will discipline all of them.

Gilead is a city of wrongdoers, Tracked with bloody footprints.

And as a band of robbers lie in wait for a person, So a band of priests murder on the way to Shechem; Certainly they have committed an act of infamy.

When I would heal Israel, The wrongdoing of Ephraim is uncovered, And the evil deeds of Samaria, For they practice deception; The thief enters, A band of robbers attack outside,

With their wickedness they make the king happy, And the officials with their lies.

They are all adulterers, Like an oven heated by the baker, Who stops stoking the fire From the time the dough is kneaded until it is leavened.

“You who hate good and love evil, Who tear off their skin from them And their flesh from their bones,

Now hear this, you heads of the house of Jacob And rulers of the house of Israel, Who despise justice And twist everything that is straight,

“Is there still a person in the wicked house, Along with treasures of wickedness, And a short measure that is cursed?

The godly person has perished from the land, And there is no upright person among mankind. All of them lie in wait for bloodshed; Each of them hunts the other with a net.

Woe to her who is rebellious and defiled, The oppressive city!

Then he said to me, “This is the curse that is going forth over the face of the entire land; everyone who steals certainly will be purged away according to the writing on one side, and everyone who swears falsely will be purged away according to the writing on the other side.

“This is what the Lord of armies has said: ‘Dispense true justice and practice kindness and compassion each to his brother;

so that upon you will fall the guilt of all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.

Which one of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? They killed those who had previously announced the coming of the Righteous One, and you have now become betrayers and murderers of Him;

‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave unpunished the one who takes His name in vain.

‘You shall not commit adultery.

who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out. They are not pleasing to God, but hostile to all people,

And I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. When I saw her, I wondered greatly.
