They also said to Pharaoh, “We have come to reside in the land, for there is no pasture for your servants’ flocks, for the famine is severe in the land of Canaan. Now, therefore, please let your servants live in the land of Goshen.”

Now there was a famine in the land; so Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a time, because the famine was severe in the land.

Then God said to Abram, “Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where they will be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years.

Now the famine was severe in the land.

For you shall live in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your grandchildren, and your flocks and your herds and all that you have.

you shall say, ‘Your servants have been keepers of livestock since our youth even until now, both we and our fathers,’ so that you may live in the land of Goshen; for every shepherd is an abomination to the Egyptians.”

Then Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Your father and your brothers have come to you.

Israel also came into Egypt; So Jacob lived in the land of Ham.

For this is what the Lord God says: “My people went down to Egypt first to reside there; then the Assyrian oppressed them without reason.

“Now a famine came over all Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction with it, and our fathers could find no food.

But God spoke to this effect, that his descendants would be strangers in a land that was not theirs, and they would enslave and mistreat them for four hundred years.

And you shall respond and say before the Lord your God, ‘My father was a wandering Aramean, and he went down to Egypt and resided there, few in number; but there he became a great, mighty, and populous nation.
