Now when Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, heard that Abner had died in Hebron, his courage failed, and all Israel was horrified.

And I will attack him while he is weary and exhausted and startle him, so that all the people who are with him will flee. Then I will strike and kill the king when he is alone,

But Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim.

So when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the middle of the gate to speak with him privately, and there he struck him in the belly, so that he died on account of the blood of his brother Asahel.

Then the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah, and frightened them from building,

For all of them were trying to frighten us, thinking, “They will become discouraged with the work and it will not be done.” But now, God, strengthen my hands.

Therefore all hands will fall limp, And every human heart will melt.

Strengthen the exhausted, and make the feeble strong.

“The king of Babylon has heard the report about them, And his hands hang limp; Distress has gripped him, Agony like a woman in childbirth.

We have heard the report of it; Our hands are limp. Anguish has seized us, Pain like that of a woman in childbirth.

On that day it will be said to Jerusalem: “Do not be afraid, Zion; Do not let your hands fall limp.
