And they mourned and wept and fasted until evening for Saul and his son Jonathan, and for the people of the Lord and the house of Israel, because they had fallen by the sword.

Then the king trembled and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. And this is what he said as he walked: “My son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you, Absalom, my son, my son!”

Then David commanded the young men, and they killed them and cut off their hands and feet, and hung them up beside the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth and buried it in the grave of Abner in Hebron.

That too would have been a guilty deed calling for judgment, For I would have denied God above.

¶“Have I rejoiced at the misfortune of my enemy, Or become excited when evil found him?

¶Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, And do not let your heart rejoice when he stumbles,

Then David and the people who were with him raised their voices and wept until there was no strength in them to weep.
