So he turned the hearts of all the men of Judah as one man, so that they sent word to the king, saying, “Return, you and all your servants.”

And behold, all the men of Israel came to the king and said to the king, “Why have our brothers, the men of Judah, abducted you and brought the king and his household and all David’s men with him, over the Jordan?”

So when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into the middle of the gate to speak with him privately, and there he struck him in the belly, so that he died on account of the blood of his brother Asahel.

Then the king said to his servants, “Do you not know that a leader and a great man has fallen in Israel this day?

¶People of low standing are only breath, and people of rank are a lie; In the balances they go up. Together they are lighter than breath.
