Then Nathan went to his house. Later the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s widow bore to David, so that he was very sick.

And he said, “While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept; for I said, ‘Who knows, the Lord may be gracious to me, and the child may live.’

Then the king stood up, tore his clothes, and lay on the ground; and all his servants were standing by with clothes torn.

Yet it came about, when Ahab heard these words, that he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and fasted, and he lay in sackcloth and went about despondently.

Now when I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for days; and I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

“Go, gather all the Jews who are found in Susa, and fast for me; do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants also will fast in the same way. And then I will go in to the king, which is not in accordance with the law; and if I perish, I perish.”

Call upon Me on the day of trouble; I will rescue you, and you will honor Me.”

When I wept in my soul with fasting, It became my disgrace.

¶Therefore on that day the Lord God of armies called you to weeping, to wailing, To shaving the head, and to wearing sackcloth.

Lord, they sought You in distress; They could only whisper a prayer, Your discipline was upon them.

Then the king went to his palace and spent the night fasting, and no entertainment was brought before him; and his sleep fled from him.

So I gave my attention to the Lord God, to seek Him by prayer and pleading, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.

Who knows, God may turn and relent, and turn from His burning anger so that we will not perish.”

And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell to the ground on his face before the ark of the Lord until the evening, both he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads.
