Thus says the Lord: I will bring evil upon you out of your own house. I will take your wives before your very eyes, and will give them to your neighbor: he shall lie with your wives in broad daylight.

My soul clings to the dust; give me life in accord with your word.

Though I walk in the midst of dangers, you guard my life when my enemies rage. You stretch out your hand; your right hand saves me.

For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, nor let your devout one see the pit.

O God, you rejected us, broke our defenses; you were angry but now revive us.

You made your people go through hardship, made us stagger from the wine you gave us.

May your hand be with the man on your right, with the son of man whom you made strong for yourself.

Will you be angry with us forever, prolong your anger for all generations?

But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it.

What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended into the lower [regions] of the earth?

I said to him, “My lord, you are the one who knows.” He said to me, “These are the ones who have survived the time of great distress; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.

“The Lord puts to death and gives life, casts down to Sheol and brings up again.
