Isaac entreated the Lord on behalf of his wife, since she was sterile. The Lord heard his entreaty, and his wife Rebekah became pregnant.

Yet the woman conceived, and by the same time the following year she had given birth to a son, as Elisha had promised;

Father of the fatherless, defender of widows— God in his holy abode,

Raise a glad cry, you barren one who never bore a child, break forth in jubilant song, you who have never been in labor, For more numerous are the children of the deserted wife than the children of her who has a husband, says the Lord.

If, however, the woman has not defiled herself, but is still pure, she will be immune and will still be fertile.

For it is written: “Rejoice, you barren one who bore no children; break forth and shout, you who were not in labor; for more numerous are the children of the deserted one than of her who has a husband.”

The well-fed hire themselves out for bread, while the hungry no longer have to toil. The barren wife bears seven sons, while the mother of many languishes.
