Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing his father had given him. Esau said to himself, “Let the time of mourning for my father come, so that I may kill my brother Jacob.”
Thus says the Lord: For three crimes of Edom, and now four— I will not take it back— Because he pursued his brother with the sword, suppressing all pity, Persisting in his anger, his wrath raging without end,
Israel then sent messengers to the king of Edom saying, “Let me pass through your land.” But the king of Edom did not give consent. They also sent to the king of Moab, but he too was unwilling. So Israel remained in Kadesh.
