They refused to obey and no longer remembered the wonders you had worked for them. They were obdurate and appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and rich in mercy; you did not forsake them.

“God is storing up the man’s misery for his children”?— let him requite the man himself so that he knows it!

Merciful and gracious is the Lord, slow to anger, abounding in mercy.

I will praise you among the peoples, Lord; I will chant your praise among the nations.

May his fathers’ guilt be mentioned to the Lord; his mother’s sin not rooted out.

The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in mercy.

Therefore, thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, against the shepherds who shepherd my people: You have scattered my sheep and driven them away. You have not cared for them, but I will take care to punish your evil deeds.

You continue your kindness through a thousand generations; but you repay the ancestors’ guilt upon their children who follow them. Great and mighty God, whose name is Lord of hosts,

Our ancestors, who sinned, are no more; but now we bear their guilt.

He prayed to the Lord, “O Lord, is this not what I said while I was still in my own country? This is why I fled at first toward Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger, abounding in kindness, repenting of punishment.

Who is a God like you, who removes guilt and pardons sin for the remnant of his inheritance; Who does not persist in anger forever, but instead delights in mercy,

Now then, may my Lord’s forbearance be great, even as you have said,

Misfortune I do not see in Jacob, nor do I see misery in Israel. The Lord, their God, is with them; among them is the war-cry of their King.

so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through justification for eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Know, then, that the Lord, your God, is God: the faithful God who keeps covenant mercy to the thousandth generation toward those who love him and keep his commandments,
