Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, “Please, let me kiss my father and mother good-bye, and I will follow you.” Elijah answered, “Go back! What have I done to you?”

Another of [his] disciples said to him, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.”

As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.

As he passed by, he saw Levi, son of Alphaeus, sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.

because this son of mine was dead, and has come to life again; he was lost, and has been found.’ Then the celebration began.

But he answered him, “Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”

The next day he decided to go to Galilee, and he found Philip. And Jesus said to him, “Follow me.”

He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.” The Beloved Disciple.

Jesus said to him, “What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours? You follow me.”

You were dead in your transgressions and sins

even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

for everything that becomes visible is light. Therefore, it says: “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.”

And even when you were dead [in] transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions;

But the one who is self-indulgent is dead while she lives.
