“When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, who love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on street corners so that others may see them. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.

When you give alms, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets to win the praise of others. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.

But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.’

When you stand to pray, forgive anyone against whom you have a grievance, so that your heavenly Father may in turn forgive you your transgressions. [

When you call me, and come and pray to me, I will listen to you.

When you spread out your hands, I will close my eyes to you; Though you pray the more, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood!

They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext, recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation.”

But he bestows a greater grace; therefore, it says: “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

Then he told them a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said,

So King Darius signed the prohibition into law.

With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit. To that end, be watchful with all perseverance and supplication for all the holy ones

Woe to you Pharisees! You love the seat of honor in synagogues and greetings in marketplaces.

Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive.” The Authority of Jesus Questioned.

But I will call upon God, and the Lord will save me.

Give ear to my words, O Lord; understand my sighing.

Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.

In the course of his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces,

so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest.”

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You lock the kingdom of heaven before human beings. You do not enter yourselves, nor do you allow entrance to those trying to enter. [

Every proud heart is an abomination to the Lord; be assured that none will go unpunished.

They love places of honor at banquets, seats of honor in synagogues,

The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

“When you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites. They neglect their appearance, so that they may appear to others to be fasting. Amen, I say to you, they have received their reward.

“[But] take care not to perform righteous deeds in order that people may see them; otherwise, you will have no recompense from your heavenly Father.

All their works are performed to be seen. They widen their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.

But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
