Jesus answered him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.’”

In the desert they gave in to their cravings, tempted God in the wasteland.

They tested God in their hearts, demanding the food they craved.

Again and again they tested God, provoked the Holy One of Israel.

But they tested and rebelled against God Most High, his decrees they did not observe.

There your ancestors tested me; they tried me though they had seen my works.

Jesus said to him in reply, “It also says, ‘You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.’”

Why, then, are you now putting God to the test by placing on the shoulders of the disciples a yoke that neither our ancestors nor we have been able to bear?

Then Peter said to her, “Why did you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen, the footsteps of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.”

Let us not test Christ as some of them did, and suffered death by serpents.

You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test, as you did at Massah.
