He said to them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.

That is why a man leaves his father and mother and clings to his wife, and the two of them become one body.

Together with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives, Noah went into the ark because of the waters of the flood.

Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah, as on the day of Massah in the desert.

Thus says the Lord: Stand by the earliest roads, ask the pathways of old, “Which is the way to good?” and walk it; thus you will find rest for yourselves. But they said, “We will not walk it.”

And they made their hearts as hard as diamond so as not to hear the instruction and the words that the Lord of hosts had sent by his spirit through the earlier prophets. So great anger came from the Lord of hosts:

They said to him, “Then why did Moses command that the man give the woman a bill of divorce and dismiss [her]?”

I say to you, whoever divorces his wife (unless the marriage is unlawful) and marries another commits adultery.”

Jesus said to him in reply, “Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.

The demons pleaded with him, “If you drive us out, send us into the herd of swine.”

But Jesus told them, “Because of the hardness of your hearts he wrote you this commandment.

[But] later, as the eleven were at table, he appeared to them and rebuked them for their unbelief and hardness of heart because they had not believed those who saw him after he had been raised.

This I say by way of concession, however, not as a command.

David also married Ahinoam of Jezreel. Thus both of them were his wives.
