When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said: I am God the Almighty. Walk in my presence and be blameless.

These are the descendants of Noah. Noah was a righteous man and blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God.

As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.

Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to [the] poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”

As he passed by, he saw Levi, son of Alphaeus, sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.” And he got up and followed him.

He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

Sell your belongings and give alms. Provide money bags for yourselves that do not wear out, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven that no thief can reach nor moth destroy.

In the same way, everyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple. The Simile of Salt.

After this he went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the customs post. He said to him, “Follow me.”

No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher.

Then he said to all, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there also will my servant be. The Father will honor whoever serves me.

they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one’s need.

You even joined in the sufferings of those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, knowing that you had a better and lasting possession.
