and whoever does not take up his cross and follow after me is not worthy of me.

As they were going out, they met a Cyrenian named Simon; this man they pressed into service to carry his cross. The Crucifixion.

Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him, “You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to [the] poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.”

He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.

As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country; and after laying the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus.

and carrying the cross himself he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha.

He said this signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.” The Beloved Disciple.

Jesus said to him, “What if I want him to remain until I come? What concern is it of yours? You follow me.”

They strengthened the spirits of the disciples and exhorted them to persevere in the faith, saying, “It is necessary for us to undergo many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.”

Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ on behalf of his body, which is the church,

so that no one be disturbed in these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this.

In fact, all who want to live religiously in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.

For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example that you should follow in his footsteps.
