And so on the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, when he gave a banquet to all his servants, he singled out the chief cupbearer and chief baker in the midst of his servants.

Now Herod had arrested John, bound [him], and put him in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip,

so much that he swore to give her whatever she might ask for.

saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ‘If a man dies without children, his brother shall marry his wife and raise up descendants for his brother.’

King Herod heard about it, for his fame had become widespread, and people were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him.”

Herod was the one who had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married.

Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so.

He enjoined them, “Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”

At that time some Pharisees came to him and said, “Go away, leave this area because Herod wants to kill you.”

[Even] Herod and his soldiers treated him contemptuously and mocked him, and after clothing him in resplendent garb, he sent him back to Pilate.

and upon learning that he was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was in Jerusalem at that time.

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene,

Now Herod the tetrarch, who had been censured by him because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and because of all the evil deeds Herod had committed,

About that time King Herod laid hands upon some members of the church to harm them.
