but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God. You shall not do any work, either you, your son or your daughter, your male or female slave, your work animal, or the resident alien within your gates.

Six days there are for doing work, but the seventh day is the sabbath of complete rest, holy to the Lord. Anyone who does work on the sabbath day shall be put to death.

Happy is the one who does this, whoever holds fast to it: Keeping the sabbath without profaning it, keeping one’s hand from doing any evil.

For thus says the Lord: To the eunuchs who keep my sabbaths, who choose what pleases me, and who hold fast to my covenant,

And foreigners who join themselves to the Lord, to minister to him, To love the name of the Lord, to become his servants— All who keep the sabbath without profaning it and hold fast to my covenant,

If you refrain from trampling the sabbath, from following your own pursuits on my holy day; If you call the sabbath a delight, the Lord’s holy day glorious; If you glorify it by not following your ways, seeking your own interests, or pursuing your own affairs—

When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “See, your disciples are doing what is unlawful to do on the sabbath.”

Some scribes who were Pharisees saw that he was eating with sinners and tax collectors and said to his disciples, “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions were hungry?

“Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming. Who but God alone can forgive sins?”

Consider how he endured such opposition from sinners, in order that you may not grow weary and lose heart.
