He began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenant farmers and left on a journey.

On that day every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand pieces of silver shall become briers and thorns.

But I had planted you as a choice vine, all pedigreed stock; How could you turn out so obnoxious to me, a spurious vine?

And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow.

“What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, ‘Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.’

“Hear another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey.

When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce.

“It will be as when a man who was going on a journey called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them.

So they said to Jesus in reply, “We do not know.” Then Jesus said to them, “Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

It is like a man traveling abroad. He leaves home and places his servants in charge, each with his work, and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch.

Summoning them, he began to speak to them in parables, “How can Satan drive out Satan?

And he taught them at length in parables, and in the course of his instruction he said to them,

After a few days, the younger son collected all his belongings and set off to a distant country where he squandered his inheritance on a life of dissipation.

So he said, “A nobleman went off to a distant country to obtain the kingship for himself and then to return.

They asked him, “Where do you want us to make the preparations?”

He answered, “Knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God has been granted to you; but to the rest, they are made known through parables so that ‘they may look but not see, and hear but not understand.’ The Parable of the Sower Explained.

It was he who, in the assembly in the desert, was with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai and with our ancestors, and he received living utterances to hand on to us.
