For I hate divorce, says the Lord, the God of Israel, And the one who covers his garment with violence, says the Lord of hosts. You should be on guard, then, for your life, and you must not break faith.

Then his disciples approached and said to him, “Do you know that the Pharisees took offense when they heard what you said?”

The Pharisees and Sadducees came and, to test him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

Some Pharisees approached him, and tested him, saying, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any cause whatever?”

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You lock the kingdom of heaven before human beings. You do not enter yourselves, nor do you allow entrance to those trying to enter. [

He set out from there and went into the district of Judea [and] across the Jordan. Again crowds gathered around him and, as was his custom, he again taught them.

He said to them in reply, “What did Moses command you?”

The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him.

He enjoined them, “Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”

The Lord said to him, “Oh you Pharisees! Although you cleanse the outside of the cup and the dish, inside you are filled with plunder and evil.

The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all these things and sneered at him.

The Pharisees and their scribes complained to his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”

The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely to see if he would cure on the sabbath so that they might discover a reason to accuse him.

but the Pharisees and scholars of the law, who were not baptized by him, rejected the plan of God for themselves.)

So the chief priests and the Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin and said, “What are we going to do? This man is performing many signs.

For the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should inform them, so that they might arrest him.

The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring about him to this effect, and the chief priests and the Pharisees sent guards to arrest him.

Have any of the authorities or the Pharisees believed in him?

They said this to test him, so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger.

Let us not test Christ as some of them did, and suffered death by serpents.
