and said to his servants, “This man is John the Baptist. He has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him.” The Death of John the Baptist.

In those days John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of Judea

King Herod heard about it, for his fame had become widespread, and people were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead; that is why mighty powers are at work in him.”

Others were saying, “He is Elijah”; still others, “He is a prophet like any of the prophets.”

Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am?”

Then he said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said in reply, “The Messiah of God.”

So they asked him, “What are you then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.”

They asked him, “Why then do you baptize if you are not the Messiah or Elijah or the Prophet?”

Some in the crowd who heard these words said, “This is truly the Prophet.”

So they said to the blind man again, “What do you have to say about him, since he opened your eyes?” He said, “He is a prophet.”
