Luke 7:12

As he drew near to the gate of the city, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. A large crowd from the city was with her.

“Do not lay your hand on the boy,” said the angel. “Do not do the least thing to him. For now I know that you fear God, since you did not withhold from me your son, your only one.”

Then God said: Take your son Isaac, your only one, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. There offer him up as a burnt offering on one of the heights that I will point out to you.

Then the whole clan confronted your servant and demanded: ‘Give up the one who struck down his brother. We must put him to death for the life of his brother whom he has killed; we must do away with the heir also.’ Thus they will quench my remaining hope and leave my husband neither name nor posterity upon the earth.”

She said, “As the Lord, your God, lives, I have nothing baked; there is only a handful of flour in my jar and a little oil in my jug. Just now I was collecting a few sticks, to go in and prepare something for myself and my son; when we have eaten it, we shall die.”

So she said to Elijah, “Why have you done this to me, man of God? Have you come to me to call attention to my guilt and to kill my son?”

Taking the child, Elijah carried him down into the house from the upper room and gave him to his mother. Elijah said, “See! Your son is alive.”

Arise, go to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. I have commanded a widow there to feed you.

Elisha promised, “This time next year you will be cradling a baby son.” She said, “My lord, you are a man of God; do not deceive your servant.”

The servant picked him up and carried him to his mother; he sat in her lap until noon, and then died.

The blessing of those in extremity came upon me, and the heart of the widow I made joyful.

I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of mercy and supplication, so that when they look on him whom they have thrust through, they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and they will grieve for him as one grieves over a firstborn. Soon afterward he journeyed to a city called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd accompanied him.

When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her and said to her, “Do not weep.”

because he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. As he went, the crowds almost crushed him.

All were weeping and mourning for her, when he said, “Do not weep any longer, for she is not dead, but sleeping.”

And many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them about their brother.

So Peter got up and went with them. When he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs where all the widows came to him weeping and showing him the tunics and cloaks that Dorcas had made while she was with them.

He gave her his hand and raised her up, and when he had called the holy ones and the widows, he presented her alive.

Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
