Dogs surround me; a pack of evildoers closes in on me. They have pierced my hands and my feet

‘We played the flute for you, but you did not dance, we sang a dirge but you did not mourn.’

There were many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him.

There were also women looking on from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of the younger James and of Joses, and Salome.

Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children,

The women who had come from Galilee with him followed behind, and when they had seen the tomb and the way in which his body was laid in it,

and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,

All were weeping and mourning for her, when he said, “Do not weep any longer, for she is not dead, but sleeping.”

Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.
