For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God, for it is written: “He catches the wise in their own ruses,”

No creature is concealed from him, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account. Jesus, Compassionate High Priest.

Let us not test Christ as some of them did, and suffered death by serpents.

They watched him closely and sent agents pretending to be righteous who were to trap him in speech, in order to hand him over to the authority and power of the governor.

But he realized their intentions and said to the man with the withered hand, “Come up and stand before us.” And he rose and stood there.

Jesus knew their thoughts and said to them in reply, “What are you thinking in your hearts?

Knowing their malice, Jesus said, “Why are you testing me, you hypocrites?

The Pharisees and Sadducees came and, to test him, asked him to show them a sign from heaven.

There your ancestors tested me; they tried me though they had seen my works.

Is it lawful for us to pay tribute to Caesar or not?”

“Show me a denarius; whose image and name does it bear?” They replied, “Caesar’s.”

and said, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all that is right, full of every sort of deceit and fraud. Will you not stop twisting the straight paths of [the] Lord?

so that we may no longer be infants, tossed by waves and swept along by every wind of teaching arising from human trickery, from their cunning in the interests of deceitful scheming.
