Joshua 7:1

But the Israelites acted treacherously with regard to the ban; Achan, son of Carmi, son of Zabdi, son of Zerah of the tribe of Judah, took goods that were under the ban, and the anger of the Lord flared up against the Israelites.

Then the other sons of Jacob followed up the slaughter and sacked the city because their sister had been defiled.

The Lord’s anger against Israel flared again, and he incited David against them: “Go, take a census of Israel and Judah.”

When he reached the hill, Gehazi received these things, appropriated them for his house, and sent the men on their way.

This command was evil in the sight of God, and he struck Israel.

They abandoned the house of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and began to serve the asherahs and the idols; and because of this crime of theirs, wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem.

I said: “My God, I am too ashamed and humiliated to raise my face to you, my God, for our wicked deeds are heaped up above our heads and our guilt reaches up to heaven.

Your wickedness affects only someone like yourself, and your justice, only a fellow human being.

Wisdom is better than weapons of war, but one bungler destroys much good.

Justice, O Lord, is on your side; we are shamefaced even to this day: the men of Judah, the residents of Jerusalem, and all Israel, near and far, in all the lands to which you have scattered them because of their treachery toward you.

Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “Do not dishevel your hair or tear your garments, lest you die and bring God’s wrath also on the whole community. While your kindred, the rest of the house of Israel, may mourn for those whom the Lord’s fire has burned up,

Then they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots to discover on whose account this evil has come to us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

“Thus says the whole community of the Lord: What act of treachery is this you have committed against the God of Israel? This day you have turned from following the Lord; by building an altar of your own you have rebelled against the Lord this day.

If today you turn away from following the Lord, and rebel against the Lord, tomorrow he will be angry with the whole community of Israel!

When Achan, son of Zerah, acted treacherously by violating the ban, was it not upon the entire community of Israel that wrath fell? Though he was but a single man, he did not perish alone for his guilt!” Reply of the Eastern Tribes.
