the descendants of Joseph formed two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. But the Levites were given no share of the land except cities to live in, with their pasture lands for the herds and flocks.

Joseph named his firstborn Manasseh, meaning, “God has made me forget entirely my troubles and my father’s house”;

and the second he named Ephraim, meaning, “God has made me fruitful in the land of my affliction.”

In the land of Egypt Joseph became the father of Manasseh and Ephraim, whom Asenath, daughter of Potiphera, priest of Heliopolis, bore to him.

Some time afterward, Joseph was informed, “Your father is failing.” So he took along with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.

So now your two sons who were born to you in the land of Egypt before I joined you here, shall be mine; Ephraim and Manasseh shall be mine as much as Reuben and Simeon are mine.

Progeny born to you after them shall remain yours; but their heritage shall be recorded in the names of their brothers.

Hezekiah sent word to all Israel and Judah, and even wrote letters to Ephraim and Manasseh, saying that they should come to the house of the Lord in Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover to the Lord, the God of Israel.

The sons of Joseph were Manasseh and Ephraim.
