So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of land that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

The plot of ground on which he had pitched his tent he bought for a hundred pieces of money from the descendants of Hamor, the father of Shechem.

As for me, I give to you, as to the one above his brothers, Shechem, which I captured from the Amorites with my sword and bow.”

For the word which he proclaimed by the word of the Lord against the altar in Bethel and against all the temples on the high places in the cities of Samaria shall certainly come to pass.”

and he sent messengers ahead of him. On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there,

Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us this well and drank from it himself with his children and his flocks?”

Many of the Samaritans of that town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman who testified, “He told me everything I have done.”

Jacob’s well was there. Jesus, tired from his journey, sat down there at the well. It was about noon.

His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.

The bones of Joseph, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried in Shechem in the plot of ground Jacob had bought from the sons of Hamor, father of Shechem, for a hundred pieces of money. This was a heritage of the descendants of Joseph.
