“My lord king, these men have done wrong in all their treatment of Jeremiah the prophet, throwing him into the cistern. He will starve to death on the spot, for there is no more bread in the city.”

So King Zedekiah ordered that Jeremiah be confined in the court of the guard and given a ration of bread every day from the bakers’ street until all the bread in the city was eaten up. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

On the ninth day of the fourth month, when famine had gripped the city and the people had no more bread,

Because I feared the great multitude and the scorn of the clans terrified me— then I should have remained silent, and not come out of doors!

and Ebed-melech went there from the house of the king and said to him,

Then the king ordered Ebed-melech the Ethiopian: “Take three men with you, and get Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”

All her people groan, searching for bread; They give their precious things for food, to retain the breath of life. “Look, O Lord, and pay attention to how I have been demeaned!

They tried to end my life in the pit, pelting me with stones.

I will have them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters; they shall eat one another’s flesh during the harsh siege under which their enemies and those who seek their lives will confine them.

But on that day I will deliver you—oracle of the Lord; you shall not be handed over to the men you dread.
