Jeremiah 22:5

and said: “I swear by my very self—oracle of the Lord—that because you acted as you did in not withholding from me your son, your only one,

But if ever you turn away and forsake my commandments and statutes which I set before you, and proceed to serve other gods, and bow down to them,

And this house which is so exalted—every passerby shall be horrified and ask: “Why has the Lord done such things to this land and to this house?”

And the answer will come: “Because they abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and they embraced other gods, bowing down to them and serving them. That is why he has brought upon them all this evil.”

Therefore I swore in my anger: “They shall never enter my rest.”

But if you refuse and resist, you shall be eaten by the sword: for the mouth of the Lord has spoken!

I have abandoned my house, cast off my heritage; The beloved of my soul I have delivered into the hand of her foes.

But if you do not obey me and keep holy the sabbath day, if you carry burdens and come through the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath, I will set fire to its gates—a fire never to be extinguished—and it will consume the palaces of Jerusalem.

Say to them: Thus says the Lord: If you do not obey me, by walking according to the law I set before you

The Chaldeans set fire to the king’s house and the houses of the people and tore down the walls of Jerusalem.

And then listen to the word of the Lord, all you Judahites living in Egypt; I swear by my own great name, says the Lord: in the whole land of Egypt, my name shall no longer be pronounced by the lips of any Judahite, saying, “As the Lord God lives.”

The Lord God has sworn by his very self— an oracle of the Lord, the God of hosts: I abhor the pride of Jacob, I hate his strongholds, and I will hand over the city with everything in it;

Therefore, because of you, Zion shall be plowed like a field, and Jerusalem reduced to rubble, And the mount of the temple to a forest ridge.

Behold, your house will be abandoned, desolate.

And to whom did he “swear that they should not enter into his rest,” if not to those who were disobedient?

When God made the promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, “he swore by himself,”

So when God wanted to give the heirs of his promise an even clearer demonstration of the immutability of his purpose, he intervened with an oath,
